Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) signed note, in Italian, requesting a payment or update about an account. Undated. Later registration stamps. Mounted to a beige mat, under glass in an ebonized wood frame along with a small engraved portrait of Napoleon. Frederick Keppel & Co. New York gallery label en verso. Autographed note (sheet): 6 in. W x 4 1/4 in. H. Print (sight): 3 1/4 in. W x 4 1/4 in. H. Frame: 17 in. W x 10 in. H. Note: Shortly after becoming Emperor of France in 1804, Napoleon also claimed the title of King of Italy. He left a lasting influence in Italy, transforming it from a collection of fragmented states into modern entities and promoting numerous legal and social reforms.
PROVENANCE: The Collection of Deborah and Kent Vauclain Bissell, Sr., by descent from his great-uncle, William Cullen Morris (1874-1975) of New York. Morris was a Vice President of Con Edison and engineer instrumental in the construction of the Astoria Tunnel.
CONDITION: Discoloration/toning to signed note and to mats. Creasing and some small holes to sheet including a 1/4 in hole affecting one word. Not examined out of frame. Some wear and scratching to frame.
