Item 1: Sixth-plate tintype photograph of a young Civil War-era soldier or military cadet wearing a nine-button coatee. Three rows of buttons visible, with ornamental frog closures on chest and sleeves. Light tinting applied to cheeks and gilt painting to buttons. Leather case has a working clasp with red velvet interior. Tin type is behind glass and wrapped with metal framing stamped “Scovill Mfg Superior / Waterbury Conn No. 833.” Case: 3/4 in. H x 3 1/4 in. W x 1/2 in. D. Tin type: 3 1/4 in. H x 2 3/4 in. W. Item 2: Grouping of ten (10) Confederate currency bills or bonds including one (1) $1000 bond dated December 14, 1864; one (1) T-65 1862 $100 Lucy Pickens note; one (1) T-16 1861 $50 Jefferson Davis note; four (4) T-67 1864 $20 Tennessee State Capitol notes; two (2) T-68 1864 horse pulling cannon $10 notes; and one (1) T-69 1864 $5 Virginia State Capitol note. Item 3: Five (5) Civil War-era currency bills including one (1) $0.50 – Fifty Cents note, Huntsville, AL (“or Tennessee”, handwritten on note), dated August 1, 1858; one (1) $0.25 – Twenty Five Cents note, County of Rockingham, Harrisonburg, Va. dated June 1st, 1862; one (1) $0.50 – Fifty Cents note, State of Mississippi, number 2247, dated May 1, 1864; one (1) One Dollar note, State of Alabama, number 3273, dated January 1st, 1863; and one (1) One Dollar note, City of Portsmouth, number 1921, dated October 7, 1864.
CONDITION: Item 1: Tintype is in overall good condition. Case exterior is intact but has some loss to leather and a delicate spine. Interior is in overall good condition. Item 2: All items in circulated condition, with staining and creases. Item 3: All items in circulated condition, with staining and creases. Significant losses to City of Portsmouth One Dollar and County of Rockingham Twenty-Five Cents pieces.
