OUR COLORED FIGHTERS, and COLORED MAN IS NO SLACKER, two scarce 1918 World War I military posters intended to recruit African Americans into the armed forces. 1st item: OUR COLORED FIGHTERS chromolithographic poster published by James Lee, 1918, featuring vignettes of Black soldiers including Goodbye to the Loved ones to Over the Top, Kamerad, a Night Raid, Decorate for Valor, to a glorious Welcome Home and Back to the Old Folks. 20 in. H x 16 in. W. Unframed. Note: this rare poster was produced in connection with a 24 minute film shown around the country by order of President Woodrow Wilson to promote recruitment. 2nd item: COLORED MAN IS NO SLACKER, chromolithographic poster published by E.G. Rensch, 1918. A Black soldier in uniform bids his sweetheart farewell as other Black soldiers march behind him under a waving American flag. 19 3/4 in. H x 15 7/8 in. W. Unframed.
CONDITION: 1st item: Exhibits chipping on all sides, small tears up to 1 in., and creases. Light toning. 2nd item: Full clean vertical tear to right quarter of the poster. Edge chipping and tears up to 1/2 in.
