Full stock .40 caliber percussion Kentucky long rifle, signed "H West" on barrel flat. Octagonal barrel with front and rear sights; brass trigger guard, ramrod loops and crescent butt plate, dark stained wood stock, double-set triggers, and wooden ramrod. Overall: 62 1/2" L; Barrel 46" L. Note: H. West (likely Hiram) was born at Georgetown in Scott County, Kentucky, in 1832, and was the son of Kentucky gunsmith Capt. Lewis West. H. West was working as a gunsmith in the same location in 1850. (Federal Census of 1850, Kentucky Division).
PROVENANCE: Private Knoxville, Tennessee collection.
CONDITION: Missing a piece of wood along left side of barrel, approx. 8 1/2" by 3/8". Repair made to nipple; pitting w some rust. Hammer is immobile in rear position.
