Remington No. 1 Creedmoor Long Range rolling block rifle in .44-77 caliber, SN 5707 with pistol grip stock and flip-up tang sight. The top of the barrel flat reads "E. Remington & Sons Ilion, N.Y." and "44 S" on the bottom of the barrel, indicating 44-77 & 44-90 Special (44 2 1/4" and 44 2 7/16"). The left side of the receiver is marked "Patents May 3, 1864, May 7 June 11, Nov 2 Dec 24, Dec 3, 1872, Sept 9 1873". It has a 34" octagon to round tapered barrel with a long-range sight mounted on the tang. Walnut stock with checkered pistol grip, brass hardware, crescent butt plate, pewter forend cap. Overall: 52" L; Barrel: 34" L. Note: Produced officially from 1872 to 1890, these expensive rifles quickly fell out of favor with limited numbers having been made.
CONDITION: Considerable rust and oxidation at the muzzle end of the barrel; the rear field sight is bent; spirit level front sight is absent, as well as the decorative triangular piece on bottom of pistol grip. Action functions as it should, hammer holds half and full cock and releases with trigger pull; loading gate opens / closes smoothly; bore is un-pitted with some rifling.
