Harry Martin Book (Pennsylvania, 1904-1971) realist oil on board landscape painting depicting the borough of New Holland in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, with a mailbox labeled "John K Lapp/New Holland PA/Route 1" in the lower left foreground along a country road leading to houses and farm houses, set against a mountain range in the background. Signed and dated "Harry M. Book 1939" lower right. Illegible pencil inscriptions, en verso of board. Housed in giltwood frame with a lamb's tongue running pattern. Sight: 27 1/2" H x 33 1/2" W. Framed: 33 1/2" H x 39 1/4" W.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Carl Klein, Brentwood, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Overall good condition. Scattered areas of paint loss, largest 1/4" x 1/4", along top edge of board. 1/4" errant mark, top left of board. Light craquelure to clouds. Frame with areas of loss, largest 1/2" x 2 3/4", to running pattern, natural age shrinkage.
