1861 Civil War Ambrotype photograph depicting a Union soldier standing with his shotgun leaning at his side; his Kepi and frock coat have been highlighted in gilt and light blue. Interior of case reads “HP Dow Plattsburgh NY 1861” in handwritten pencil. Housed under a scalloped, arched decorative gilt mat enclosed in a leather union case. 4 in H x 2 1/2 in W (closed). Note: Henry P. Dow (1839-?) owned a photography studio in Plattsburgh, NY, during the early 1860s; later drafted into the army in 1863. His occupation on draft forms was given as “photographer”. The studio appeared under new ownership in 1864.
PROVENANCE: Private Middle Tennessee collection.
CONDITION: The image is in very good condition with discoloration halo under mat. Some wear to case.
