American School, 19th century oil on canvas portrait depicting a little girl wearing a white dress and tartan sash with pink ribbon in her dark hair, seated and resting her elbow on a tasseled chair, c. 1875. Possible obscured signature lower left. Housed in the original Victorian frame with oval aperture and pebble textured spandrels. Sight: 35″ H x 28″ W. Frame: 45″ H x 38″ W.
PROVENANCE: Private Nashville collection.
CONDITION: 2″ box shaped tear with paint loss lower left of painting in the area of subject’s knee/chair seat (poorly repaired with a patch en verso). 1/2″ puncture, lower left, with black pen marks across it. Widespread, overzealous cleaning to background area and part of subject’s forehead. Original frame, regilt, with some losses and replaced spots.
