Full stock flintlock long rifle bearing the name of Nashville maker/merchant Kirkman & Ellis. Heavy octagonal 39 3/4 in. barrel; bore measures approx. 48 caliber. Lockplate is marked “Kirkman & Ellis Nashville Tenne” with game bird design behind cock and foliate scroll on hammer; set trigger. Brass ramrod guides, buttplate, and trigger guard. Overall 55 in. L., 13 pounds. Ca. 1850.
Note: 1848 records list a hardware manufacturing/storefront partnership between John Kirkman and James Ellis, located at 34 Public Square, Nashville.
CONDITION: Crack repairs on left side of stock and lower butt plate. Dark bore with very good rifling, frizzen and cock function properly (no half cock), releases with strong pull; later ramrod.
