Large carved and inked Native American Inuit or Eskimo ivory walrus tusk. Decorated with high-relief carvings of a bear, walrus, seal, whale, and fish along the top flanked by inlaid cribbage boards. One side with scrimshaw decoration depicting the detail of an Alaskan coastline identifying rivers and towns including Nome where gold was discovered in 1898 along with two seals. The other side depicting a carved polar bear, two seals, and two fish in relief. The tip is carved and inked to depict a fish. 31 1/4" L. Early 20th century.
PROVENANCE: Descent from the family; by oral history this was acquired before the 1960s.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition. A couple of very minor areas of discoloration.
