English or Continental School signed oil on canvas painting depicting a young woman in a pink hat, blue jacket, brown skirt, and pinned-up apron, leaning against a rustic wooden gate and pensively gazing downward. A dense treeline and open field are in the background beneath a cloud-filled blue sky. Signed in red "C Petit" lower left and inscribed "C. Petit" en verso of stretcher, possibly Charles or Corneille Petit. English art supply stencil mark en verso of canvas. Housed in a molded giltwood frame, possibly original, with foliate, bead and reel, and rosette decoration. Sight: 26 1/2" H x 19 1/2" W. Framed: 37 1/4" H x 30 1/4" W. Late 19th century.

CONDITION: Overall good condition with light scattered craquelure. Areas of retouching fluoresce under UV light, largest measuring 2" x 3 1/2", with two corresponding patches evident, en verso of canvas. Frame with light scattered surface scratches and minor losses, largest measuring 3/8" X 5/8".
