Shirley Ximena Hopper Russell (California/Hawaii, 1886-1985) AKA Shirley Marie Russell oil on board Hawaii coastal landscape painting depicting the sunny beach and purple mountains of Punalu''u, O''ahu, with cloudy skies above, likely 1930s-40s. Signed "Shirley Russell," lower right, and inscribed "Punaluu, Oahu / Return to: / Nickerson Galleries / 177 South Green St / Honolulu / $25.00" in pencil to verso. Housed in a simple gilt wood frame. Board: 11" H x 14" W. Frame: 13 3/4" H x 16 3/4" W. Biographical Note: Born in Del Rey, California in 1886, Shirley Russell studied at Stanford University, California School of Fine Art, California College of Arts and Crafts, University of Hawaii, and in Paris. In 1909 she married engineer Lawrence Russell and in the early 1920s settled in Honolulu. She was active there as an art teacher and painter until her death in 1985. Russell''s work includes many floral still lifes and seascapes. She was a member of the Honolulu Art Association and exhibited at the Paris Salon, 1927; Honolulu Academy of Art, 1932, 1935, 1938, 1943, and 1945; Painters & Sculptors of LA, 1937; Oakland Art Gallery, 1943-45; and California Palance of the Legion of Honor, 1946. CONDITION: Overall very good condition. Localized areas of craqueleure and pinpoint flaking losses, especially to white impasto in clouds and surf.
