Paul Jean Clays (Belgium, 1819-1900) oil on board maritime painting depicting a single-masted ship with some passengers upon the deck adrift on the calm sea and with a small boat at its starboard side. Additional masted ships drift across the water in the midground with a distant shoreline and buildings in the background beneath a cloudy, blue sky. Signed "P. J. Clays" lower right. Scott & Fowles Co. and two additional numbering paper labels, en verso. Housed in a molded giltwood frame with foliate accents and central ornaments as well as anthemon flourish corners. Sight: 11 1/4" H x 14 3/4" W. Framed: 21 3/8" H x 24 3/4" W.
CONDITION: Overall good condition with light surface grime and slight abrasion to paint surface along edges, particularly at the lower corners. Frame with scattered losses at corners, largest measuring 1/2" x 1/2".
