John Callow (England, 1822-1878) oil on canvas maritime painting, "Dismantling the Old Hulk", depicting the remnants of a brigantine ship moored alongside two rowboats and a barrel before a building with billowing smokestack to the right having additional vessels docked along the coast in the background all beneath a pink smoke-filled blue sky. Signed within image "John Callow" lower right quadrant. Inscribed "John Callow" with additional F. L. Pettman, Ltd. paper label affixed, en verso. Housed in its original giltwood frame with foliate and scroll accents and flourish corners having placard with title and artist's name and dates affixed to lower sight edge. Sight: 17 5/8" H x 13 1/2" H . Framed: 26 1/8" H x 22 1/4" W.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition with minute scattered craquelure. Scattered areas fluoresce under UV light indicating inpainting, largest measuring 1/2" x 5 3/4" along the upper-right edge. Frame with slight scattered splitting to wood and minute wear to corners.
