Sterling Strauser (American, 1907-1995) large oil on board expressionist painting titled "Garage Band," depicting figures playing various instruments against a rhythmic, abstract background, rendered in shades of gold/brown, black and white with thick impasto accents. Signed lower left and dated 1960. 36" H x 48" W. Unframed. Note: According to the son of Lyzon Gallery owner Myron King, this painting was inspired by a Beatles-era garage band called "The Needles" that met in Sterling Strauser''s neighborhood in East Stroudsberg, PA. The band was eventually taken to court for disturbing the peace with its loud practicing. Strauser was called as a witness but surprised many of his neighbors when he proclaimed on the stand that he actually enjoyed the music!
PROVENANCE: The collection of Myron King, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition, some wear at edges.
