Walter Hollis Stevens (Tennessee, 1927-1980) oil on burlap abstract expressionist painting, “Cascade,” c. 1960. Subdued blue-grey tones, darker shades of grey, and black elements surround a central red form, with orange, blue, yellow, and other colors incorporated throughout. Rendered in gestural, expressive, brushwork. Signed lower left. Titled, additionally signed, and numbered “9” to stretcher. Unframed. 50 in. H x 36 1/4 in. W. Biography: (Courtesy Tennessee Arts Commission) “As one of the acclaimed Knoxville Seven in the 1960s, Stevens was fresh on the scene of abstract expressionism for East Tennessee and an early faculty member of the University of Tennessee’s art department. His work resides in numerous collections including the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Knoxville Museum of Art, Carnegie Visual Arts Center in Alabama, the Mint Museum in Charlotte, and others.”
