Oil on canvas portrait, unsigned but possibly by Nicola Marschall (Alabama/Kentucky, 1829-1917), of Joseph Carlos Rich, born 1859 to Sterling Brown Rich of Wilson county, Tennessee, and his wife, Anna Elizabeth Daniel. Rich began a law practice in Mobile, Alabama in March, 1881, was a member of the city council in 1882 and was elected mayor of Mobile from 1888 to 1894. He was a democratic candidate for governor in 1894, was elected to the legislature in 1902, also served as chairman of the judiciary committee of the house of representatives.
