Large brass ship wheel with wooden handles, stamped, "USS Yosemite 1898 Wrecked on Guam 1900". 41 1/2"diameter. Note – The USS Yosemite was commissioned by the U. S. Navy in 1898 at the start of Spanish American War. It intercepted the Spanish steamer SS Antonio Lopez and initiated the 3rd battle of San Juan when it attempted to enter San Juan. In November of 1900, the Yosemite was blown from its anchorage in Guam by a hurricane and damaged. Unable to be repaired, the ship was scuttled offshore. Provenance: Gatlinburg, TN collection. Condition: Overall very good condition.
