John Woodrow Kelley (Tennessee/New York, b. 1952) oil on canvas painting entitled War and depicting the profile of an ancient Greek soldier with a Corinthian helmet tilted back on his head to reveal his face. Visible at right and lower left are the shaft of a spear, or dory, and the top of a shield or hoplon. Signed "John Woodrow Kelley" and dated 2003 en verso and inscribed "War" to back of stretcher. Housed in a rusticated gilt and ebonized wood frame. Canvas: 16" H x 16" W. Frame: 19 7/16" H x 19 7/16" W. Note: This work was exhibited in the 2004 John Woodrow Kelley retrospective exhibition Greek Mythology Now at The Parthenon Museum, Nashville, TN, and is reproduced in the exhibition catalog, p. 21.
