Continental School, late 19th to early 20th century, large oil on canvas painting depicting a red-haired woman sniffing a pink rose that grows from the potted plant she holds. She stands before the entryway to a building, possibly a storefront, where a man holds another potted plant while he watches her from beneath a torn awning. Late 19th or early 20th C. Signed illegibly, possibly "E.L. Perine" or "E.L. Perino," lower right. Housed in an ornate gilt wood frame. Canvas: 35 1/2" H x 27 1/2" W. Frame: 42 1/4" H x 34 1/4" W.
CONDITION: Canvas has been relined. Scattered inpainting and retouching throughout, largest areas to stairs behind woman, 9 1/2" x 6", and between tip of woman''s nose and arm, 2 3/4" x 1/2".
