Oil on canvas genre painting after Eugen Felix (Austrian, 1837-1906) that depicts a child asleep in a wicker bassinet or basket and watched over by a small dog who looks directly at the viewer, late 19th or early 20th c. Coals glow in a stove at right and vegetables lie in the foreground. Unsigned. Housed in a giltwood frame. Sight: 25 in H x 31 in W. Frame: 32 in H x 37 1/2 in W. Note: This popular 19th-century image, sometimes called “The First Friend,” was widely reproduced in paintings and prints.

CONDITION: Repaired punctures with losses, without retouching, to center-right and lower-right, largest 2 in x 1 1/2 in, and puncture to sheet at center-left, 1/4 in x 1/4 in. Area of retouching to pillow at left of child’s head, 1 1/2 in x 1/2 in. Faint stretcher marks along upper, right, and lower edges. Frame with minor abrasions, losses, and cracking.
