Octave Tassaert (French, 1800-1874) oil on canvas genre painting depicting a young woman lying partially nude in a dark, wooded setting, with her eyes cast upward as if in pain (or possibly death). A black mourning ribbon encircles her wrist and flowers are strewn beside her gown. Initialed lower left. French art supplier stencil en verso of canvas. Housed in an antique, but likely not original carved and parcel gilt frame with various illegible pencil inscriptions and old label remnants en verso. Sight: 9 in H x 7 in W. Frame: 14 1/4 in H x 12 1/ 4 in W.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Billie Ann Smith, Nashville, TN.
CONDITION: Craquelure throughout. 1/2 in repair to background, upper left. Signature area at lower left fluoresces. Frame with losses, fine cracks and some regilding.
