Rare pair of T.J. Wheatley American Art Pottery Wall Pockets, featuring a flared rim with six tulip buds and undulating leaves in heavy relief, over carved vertical panels, all in a textured matte green glaze. Unsigned. 18" L x 7" W x 5 1/2" D. Note: these exceptionally rare wall pockets are believed to be the same ones pictured on the cover of the catalog for the Smith and Jones Important Sale of American Art Pottery and Metals, Sept. 26-Oct. 10, 1996 lot 277A); they appear to have undergone professional restoration since being sold in that auction. A copy of the catalog is available to the winning bidder.
PROVENANCE: Private Middle Tennessee estate.
CONDITION: Very good condition with no damage, chips or cracks visible to naked eye. UV light inspection reveals some professional restoration to chips to leaves on both pieces and to one tip.
