Ludwig Meixner (German, 1828-1885) oil on canvas nocturnal landscape, depicting a village with the spire of a church silhouetted in moonlight and reflected in a body of water below. Housed in the original giltwood frame with carved acanthus and cartouche moldings, with an outer ribbon molding and dark stained wood surround. Signed "Ludwig Meixner" en verso with possible title, "Munchen" (Munich). Sight – 14"H x 11"W. Frame – 25 1/2" H x 22 1/2"W (overall).
CONDITION: Repaired tear to lower center, with 1" patch visible en verso. Alligatoring, tenting and buckling to canvas throughout, with some scattered exfoliation at raised areas of tenting, primarily in the lower two-thirds of the canvas. Frame has some scattered wear and age cracks/abrasions, but is in overall very good condition with likely original gesso. It may have originally had a glass shadowbox covering.
