Three (3) 17th century newspapers, including The London Athenian Mercury, Sept. 23, 1693 with mention of the Salem Witch Trials. Page 2, column 2 carries an ad for "A Further Account of the Tryals of the New England Witches, with the Observation of a Person who was there first taken into Examination, to which is added Cases of Conscience concerning Witch Crafts and Evil Spirits personating men. Written at the requests of the Ministers of New England. By Increase Mather, President of Harvard College." Also included is the Oct. 28, 1693 issue of the Athenian Mercury, containing mostly Scriptures for the Proof of Eternal Torment, and the London Gazette, Monday, April 2 to Thursday, April 5, 1666, carrying mainly news of ships arrived to and from ports in Europe; mention at very end of the number of deaths due to the Bubonic Plague for the week. Athenian Mercury newspapers approximately 12 1/4" x 8". The London Gazette – 10 1/2" x 6 3/4". Each page 1 and 2 (front and back) only. Provenance: the collection of Ross Webb, Brentwood, TN. CONDITION: All with toning, scattered foxing, minor edge losses, overall good condition.
