Liu Wenquan (China, b. 1956) oil on canvas painting of a man in a Chinese plains landscape, 1997. The man turns and looks to the viewer''s right while he rests his hand on a dagger fastened around his waist. Behind him stand two horses and a small building, all beneath dark clouds that cast shadows throughout the scene. Signed and dated "LIU WENQUAN 97," lower right. Housed in a distressed ebonized and painted wood frame. Canvas: 34" H x 38 3/8" W. Frame: 42 1/4" H x 46 3/8" W.
CONDITION: Localized areas of negligible cracking especially to the left side of the man''s hat and hair and to area between lefthand brim of hat and edge of canvas, largest 4" x 2 1/2," plus to area above tip of dagger, 2 1/2" x 2 1/2". Some warping or buckling throughout.
