Paul Jacoulet (France/Japan, 1902-1960) shin hanga Japanese woodblock print depicting a woman in a pink dress who stands before a flowering tree by night and observes a spiderweb, the threads of which Jacoulet prints in silver, 1941. Pencil signed "Paul Jacoulet" above bird chop mark, lower right. Titled Fluers du Soir, Truck-Toloas (Evening Flowers, Toloas, Truk) to lower right margin. With JP watermark, lower left. Editioned 201/350 en verso. Housed in a Japan paper folder with tissue interleaving, possibly original to the print. Sheet: 18 7/16" H x 14" W. Portfolio: 20 1/8" H x 14 3/4" W. Note: Truck (or Truk), now Chuuk, is a Micronesian state. Tonoas (also called Tonowas or Dublon) is an island in the Chuuk Lagoon.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition, with minor foxing to lower margin. Old tape residue to corners, especially lower and upper right. 1/4" area of staining extending from flower into part of woman''s hair.
