Grand Tour Classical style carved alabaster figure of a partially nude woman reclining on a decorative chaise. After Antonio Canova’s (1757-1822) “Pauline Bonaparte as Venus Victrix,” 1805-1808, in the collection of the Galleria Borghese, Rome. Constructed in two pieces. 8 1/2 in H x 13 in W x 3 1/2 in D. Italian, 19th century.
PROVENANCE: Estate of Judge John Nixon, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Legs of couch have been glued and show some old tape, glue and paint residue to underside. A few scattered small edge chips to both figure and base/chaise sections. Small area of red staining to back of subject’s drape. Segment at end of top piece (below subject’s feet) has been glued.
