Provincial slat back armchair, serpentine arched crestrail over four conforming slats, each with pierced kidney shape in the center flanked by molded rectangular stiles. Molded armrests ending in scrolled handrests, over round-to-square tapered legs ending in whorl feet in front (plain round rear legs are extentions of stiles). Round and block turned side stretchers and later central ring turned stretcher. Later woven seat. 42"H. Probably French Provincial or French Colonial (possibly American Mississippi River Valley), 18th century. Provenance: the estate of Margaret Wemyss Connor, Nashville, Tennessee. Condition: Numerous repairs and some worm damage, particularly to legs; front stretcher and seat replaced, overall wear and abrasions, later finish.
