Early Southern quilt, likely Virginia or North Carolina, made of imported cotton fabrics pieced in a quarter round circle and square pattern. Separate bindings, no batting. 95 1/2 in H x 95 1/2 in. W. Mid-19th century.
PROVENANCE: Private Tennessee collection, acquired many years ago from a Virginia dealer with oral history of an African American maker.
CONDITION: Scattered losses to binding and areas of fraying. 2 in. tear to circular form in upper right quadrant, fabric still connected. 1 x 1 in. tear lower right quadrant, missing fabric. Overall staining to white wholecloth backing.
