Rare pair of Charles II silk embroidered stumpwork pictures, companion pieces depicting a man and woman in landscape setting, possibly the Biblical figures Boaz and Ruth. The woman holds a few pieces of grain in her hand and is surrounded by sheaves of wheat, while the man holds a large and elaborate purse. Details such as insects, leaves and floral sprays, rendered in metallic thread and with a variety of damask and velvet fabrics, enhance the scene. Housed under glass in paneled gilt wood frames. Sight: 9 1/2 in H x 4 1/2 in H. Frames: 13 1/2 in H x 8 in. English, mid to late 17th century.
PROVENANCE: The estate of collector and designer Linda McCormick Felts, Memphis, TN.
CONDITION: The textiles are in overall very good condition for their age with minor discoloration and fading, having a few spots of losses or unraveling to threads, and minimal shattering to silk ground. Not examined out of frame. Textiles appear to be tacked to their backings. Wear and small surface losses to frames.
