Watercolor and silk embroidered memorial picture depicting a woman placing flowers on an urn and monument, “Sacred to the memory of John Tuttle on March 2, 1756 / Aged 19 months.” A girl and small boy weep at one side of the monument while a cherub angel flies overhead, bearing a wreath. Two weeping willows and a tree with flame-stitched leaves enclose the scene at each side while a fence and greenery stand in the background. Eglomise mat is signed “Wrought by Miss Eliza Tuttle.” Likely original lemon gilt frame with egg and dart molded sight edge. Image: 20 in H x 21 1/2 in W. Frame: 26 in H x 28 in W. Possibly Connecticut, Late 18th century.
PROVENANCE: The estate of collector and designer Linda McCormick Felts, Memphis, TN.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition. Some light wear and losses to black reverse painting. Image with some scattered foxing and a couple of very tiny holes, some toning, light rippling and fading to silk. Several spots of wear and regilding to frame. Original backing has been replaced with foam core board.
