American Touching Stars variant pattern quilt, consisting of repurposed mid-18th century strips of linen crewel work, most likely from a dress, and paired with strips of red wool piecing likely repurposed from clothing, with pieced patterned wool fabrics creating the Touching Stars design. Printed delaine fabric in pieced star blocks. The binding is a green and yellow cotton print, circa 1860, separately applied by hand. The backing is a patterned brown cotton and there is no batting. New England, 19th century. 83 in. x 86 in. Note: This is one of three quilts in this auction from the collection of Linda Felts of Memphis, recently featured in the Pieced & Patterned exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Florida, which ran from September 18, 2021, to January 23, 2022.
PROVENANCE: The estate of collector and designer Linda McCormick Felts, Memphis, TN.
CONDITION: Many repairs and darning of holes in embroidered panels but overall stable. No moth holes in the wool panels with possible evidence of insect damage to the back.
