English school, Adam and Eve needlework sampler with verse, silk on linen, signed at bottom "Elizabeth Wordingham was born/ September 10 / 1823 aged 13." Verse at top reads: "Oh may heavenly treasure find and choose the better part / Give me a humble pious mind and a meek and lowly heart." Geometric border and numerous pictorial motifs including a school or castle, deer, insects, baskets of flowers, angels, birds, crowns, Adam and Eve and tree with coiled snake. Shades of green, red/brown, and gold/beige. Condition: even toning to linen ground, few small losses to linen ground and one small area of loss to thread on right hand side green basket. Recently archivally mounted with a taupe mat and framed in an older (but possibly not original) giltwood frame. Sight: 12 1/2" square; framed 16 3/4" square.
