Two (2) US Patent Models from 1874 dealing with the preservation and cooking of oysters. 1st Item: “Refrigerating Tub”, by James C. Jones, patent no. 156,799, Nov. 10th, 1874; “a means for keeping shelled oysters and similar articles in a state of preservation while being transported”. Wood construction with divided metal interior, iron rings and hinge, 12 in. H x 12 1/2 in. D. 2nd Item: “Gas Heater for Cooking Oysters”, by Alfred W. Manning, patent no. 154,609, Sep. 1st, 1874; “a novel device for roasting oysters, either within the shell… or after they have been removed”. Copper construction. 8 1/2 in. H x 8 1/2 in. W. Both are original models with hanging tags, original finish. Accompanied by copies of original patent office drawings and description.
PROVENANCE: Private Kentucky collection; ex Mr. and Mrs. O. Rundle Gilbert Collection of Original United States Patent Models, 1790-1890, Garrison, New York.
CONDITION: Both items are in good overall condition; bucket with spots of rust, lid does not close completely due to misalignment. Note: due to the innovative / experimental nature of patent models, it can be difficult to ascertain if all original parts are present or working as originally intended, and we do not guarantee their completeness or functionality.
