Two (2) 19th c. paint decorated U.S. patent models. 1st Item: A grain painted combination refrigerator and water cooler patented July 22, 1873 by H.W.B. Hervey of Philadelphia, patent # 141141, measuring 10 in H x 8 1/2 in W x 6 in D. Accompanied by a copy of original patent office drawings and description. 2nd Item: A paint decorated rocking chair by G.H. Spaulding (patent number unknown), received at the patent office Jan. 9, 1869. 10 1/2 in H x 5 1/2 in W x 11 in L. Note: the tips of the rocker feet affix to a metal band, which would have presumably cushioned (or accentuated) the velocity of the rocker.
PROVENANCE: Private Kentucky collection; ex Mr. and Mrs. O. Rundle Gilbert Collection of Original United States Patent Models, 1790-1890, Garrison, New York.
CONDITION: Rocking chair model with some debris/staining to junction of back and one arm; some moderate paint wear. Refrigerator model has minimal exterior wear. Note: due to the innovative/experimental nature of patent models, it can be difficult to ascertain if all original parts are present or working as originally intended, and we do not guarantee their completeness or functionality.
