Southern, likely Virginia or Kentucky, inlaid walnut corner cupboard, poplar secondary. Single case construction with an ogee molded cornice, frieze with foliate vine, sprig, and contrasting rope style inlay, canted sides, two glazed eight-pane upper doors enclosing four shelves, applied waist moldings above two paneled lower doors with sprig and line inlay, enclosing two shelves, all resting on a molded base with bracket feet. 83 1/4 in. H x 24 3/4 in. D x 40 1/2 in. W. First quarter of the 19th century.
PROVENANCE: Private Nashville collection, formerly in the collection of Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander.
CONDITION: Upper edge of right cornice return is an older replacement, right foot facings appear to be old replacements but retain the original blocking. The frieze inlay is slightly off-center. The right door hinges appear to be original but have been repositioned. The glass panes are replacements and have added reinforcements around each pane. The lower door hinges are replacements with putty fill to old hinge holes.
