Alexander John Drysdale (American/Louisiana, 1870-1934) oil wash on board landscape painting depicting an overcast Louisiana bayou marsh. Signed faintly "A. J. Drysdale" lower right. Partial Favor, Ruhl & Co. artist board paper label as well as partially legible New Orleans art dealer stamp, en verso. Housed in a giltwood frame with green-painted fillet design. Sight: 3 3/4" H x 17 1/2" W. Framed: 6 3/4" H x 20 5/8" W. Biography: Alexander Drysdale is known for his hazy Louisiana landscapes painted using a distinctive oil wash technique. He studied at the Southern Art Union and at the Arts Students League in New York City before opening a studio in the French Quarter of New Orleans. His work is in the collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and The Historic New Orleans Collections.
PROVENANCE: The Collection of William and Fletch Coke, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition with minute scattered exfoliation, particularly to left edge. Frame with scattered errant gilt.
