Portrait of a Gentleman, possibly American, oil on canvas laid down on board. The subject is seated in a red chair, with powdered hair or wig, and attired in a brown dress coat and white cravat, against a plain brown background. Housed in a carved wormy chestnut frame, possibly original. Sight: 34 3/4" H x 26 1/2" W.30 1/4" H x 32 3/4" W. Mid to late 18th Century.
PROVENANCE: Private Nashville, Tennessee collection, acquired from the collection of Wilfred and Eleanor Funk of New Jersey.
CONDITION: Painting has been lined and laid down on board. Texture of paint has been flattened due to old lining. Craquelure consistent with age, scattered flea bite losses, possible overpainting to the sitter's arm and background.
