Itzchak "Isaac" Tarkay (Israel/Serbia, 1935-2012) original oil on canvas painting depicting three women seated at tables in an interior scene rendered with brightly colored simplified forms and clean lines. Signed "Tarkay" lower right. Prior sales tag attached en verso. Housed in a contemporary giltwood frame with a linen liner. Sight: 30" H x 23 1/2" W. Framed: 35" H x 29 1/4" W. Biography: Itzchak Tarkay was born in 1935 near the border of Yugoslavia and Hungary. At the young age of 9, Nazis forced his family to live in the Mathausen concentration camp until the end of the war. Upon his return home, he developed an interest in art. He later went to study at the Bezalel Art Academy after his family immigrated to Jerusalem. However, due to his family's difficult financial state, he left school after only one year. He was allowed to continue his scholarship until his mobilization to the Israeli Army. Tarkay enrolled at the Anvi Institute of Art in Tel Aviv, graduating in 1956. His art has been exhibited both in Israel and abroad. This painting was purchased circa 1990 through designer Shirley Horowitz of Davishire Interiors, which carried some of Tarkay's original works.
