John Adams Spelman (Minnesota/Illinois, 1880-1941) impressionistic oil on canvas fall landscape painting titled “In the Alleganies” and depicting a view of the Allegany Mountains from a valley with a large, open field and homestead in the fore- and middle-ground and the mountains under a blue sky in the background. Signed and dated “Spelman, 1917” lower right. Additionally signed and titled along the lower stretcher en verso. Housed in a gilt carved wood frame. Sight: 13 1/2 in H 17 3/4 in W. Framed: 17 1/2 in H x 21 3/4 in W. Biography: Minnesota-born artist John Adams (Jack) Spelman studied at the Art Institute of Chicago under John H. Vanderpoel and Charles F. Browne. An avid outdoorsman, he was known for his Minnesota and Great Lakes area landscapes. He also spent time in the South painting the mountains around Gatlinburg, Tennessee and Asheville, North Carolina with Chicago painter Rudolph Ingerle, with whom he shared a similar style.
CONDITION: Painting with minor areas of exfoliation or flaking to center-left, lower-left, and center-right edges and craquelure especially to sky area. Frame with minor scattered wear to gilt.
