Manner of Charles Brooking (English, 1723-1759) oil on canvas maritime painting depicting several ships in calm waters, with figures working in smaller boats in the left foreground and darkening clouds rising in the background. Housed in an antique molded giltwood frame with beaded sight edge. Unsigned. Sight – 16" H x 23" W. Framed: 20" H x 27" W. English, 18th century.
PROVENANCE: Private Nashville, Tennessee collection.
CONDITION: Lined. 2" repair left side of canvas, sky area. Two areas of repair, each about 1" L, center of canvas, in clouds. A few extraneous paint splatters, mostly lower right quadrant. Craquelure throughout. Frame with scattered small cracks and losses, particularly at the outer edge.
