Cecil Crosley “Spike” Bell (American, 1906-1970) oil on canvas painting depicting passengers on the deck of a ferry, catching a glimpse of the HMS Queen Mary as the ships pass in the harbor, with the New York City skyline in the background. Signed lower left “C. Bell” and titled and dated “Passing Ships Queen Mary ’36” en verso of stretcher. Parcel gilt and painted green wood frame. Stretcher: 16 in. W x 12 in. H. Frame: 17 1/2 in. H x 14 1/2 in. W. Biography: “Cecil Bell was born in Seattle, WA in 1906, and he later moved to Staten Island, NY. It was in New York City where he found the inspiration for his work, the city and its people, focusing on daily life subjects. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League with John Sloan. CONDITION: Overall good condition. Some faint craquelure to center. Area of tiny spots of flakes or paint skips lower right corner. Inclusion speck to right center sky area. A few small abrasions to frame.
