John Rettig (American/Cincinnati, 1855-1932) oil on board impressionist painting, possibly depicting Marblehead, Massachusetts. Water shimmers under a sunny sky as yachts sail past a harbor; figures converse on a pier beside a boat, possibly preparing to enter the race. Signed lower right. Period, possibly original giltwood frame. Cincinnati framing label en verso. Sight: 17 1/2 in. W x 14 1/2 in. H. Frame: 21 in. W x 19 in. H. Biography: John Rettig was born in Cincinnati and began fresco painting as a teenager. He attended the Cincinnati Art School where he studied with Edward Potthast and Frank Duveneck. He furthered his studies in Paris and spent many years in Holland living in fishing villages. In Cincinnati, Rettig worked as a modeler of Rookwood Pottery. He also worked as a painter, muralist, and set designer, and created many open-air pageants in Cincinnati, North Africa and Mexico. His work was exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy, the Boston Art Club, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
PROVENANCE: Private Middle Tennessee collection, by descent from family in Cincinnati.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition. Light yellowing to varnish and a few small inclusions to sky area. Not examined out of frame.
