Scarce North Carolina alkaline glazed jug by Henry Ritchie (b. 1822, Lincoln Co. NC), marked "HR" on upper shoulder with an inscribed "2" denoting gallon capacity. "HR" impressed mark similar to illustrated mark for Henry Ritchie on page 36, Figure 53 of "Two Centuries of Potters: A Catawba Valley Tradition," Lincoln County Historical Association, Lincoln County Museum of History, 1999. Henry was the son of Moses Ritchie and the older brother of Thomas Ritchie. 13 1/2" H. Third quarter of 19th century. Provenance: Betty Irene Yates estate, Greeneville, TN. Condition: Condition chips to outer rim edge, shallow chip to base edge.
