Arnold Marc Gorter (Netherlands, 1866-1933) oil on canvas impressionistic landscape painting depicting a river running through rural scenery including trees and cattle that reflects across the surface of the water. Signed "A M Gorter" lower right. Old label from the Continental Galleries of Fine Art in Montreal and biography on the artist mounted, en verso. Housed in a molded giltwood Louis XV style frame. Sight: 19" H x 15" W. Frame: 28 1/2" H x 24 1/4" W. Biography: Arnold Marc Gorter was a student of the National Academy in Amsterdam, but traveled to Germany and France to paint professionally, finding great success. He painted numerous landscapes in the manner of the French Barbizon School, many of which were accepted into French annual Salons.
PROVENANCE: The collection of Dr. Andrew Wilkerson, by descent from the estate of Vernon and Vicki Meche, Iron City, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Painting in overall very good condition with some abrasion to the perimeter of the canvas, area of scratching in upper right corner, possibly done by artist, approximately 1" L. Frame with some light wear, cracking, and paint loss.
