Percy Van Eman Ivory (American, 1883-1960) oil on canvas illustration art painting depicting a ghostly, ethereal woman in white appearing to gentleman dressed in dark suit and standing beside a window. Signed P.V.E. Ivory lower right. Molded wood grain frame. Sight: 34 1/2" H x 25 1/2" W. Frame: 41" H x 32" W.
Biography: Illustrator and painter Percy Van Eman Ivory was born in Sacramento and studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute. In 1904 he began studying with Brandywine School founder Howard Pyle, and by 1918 he was working in illustration in New York City. Ivory was a member of the Society of Illustrators and the Salmagundi Club.
PROVENANCE: The collection of artist, cartoonist and character creator Guy Gilchrist, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Painting with minor scattered retouching, especially to the background between the two figures and to the lower part of the dress. Very minor inpainting to both lower corners. Frame in overall good condition.
