Large carved alabaster sculpture after Johann Heinrich Von Dannecker (German, 1758-1841) depicting the mythological Greek princess Ariadne riding a panther. Not signed. 28 in. H x 25 in. W x 10 in. D. Together with an additional associated base, 1.5 in. H x 25 in. W x 10 in. D. Late 19th to early 20th century. Note: Dannecker’s original marble sculpture, symbolizing wildness tamed by beauty, is widely considered one of the most popular 19th century German sculptures. It is in the Liebieghaus collection.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of George Bradley, Lewisburg, TN.
CONDITION: Losses to two corners and repair to a third corner. Repair to tip of lion’s tail. Scattered scratches and spots of discoloration to alabaster.
