Guy Carleton Wiggins (New York/Connecticut, 1883-1962) oil on academy board American impressionist maritime painting depicting three large sailboats grounded on a beach, with the masts of numerous other ships visible behind them. Four figures accompanied by a small boat walk along the shore at right. Behind them a body of water in the middle ground reflects the cloudy sky and separates the figures from a distant green hillside. Signed "Guy C Wiggins" in brown paint, lower right, and titled in brown paint to verso "Clearing after a Shower." Inscribed "AJ Bogdanove" and "Leonard Clayton" in pencil to back of frame along with Hayes Storage, New York sticker. Housed in a gilt wood Art Deco frame with foliate corners. Board: 12" H x 16" W. Frame: 19 3/8" H x 23 3/8" W. Note: Abraham Jacob Bogdanove (1888-1946) was a Russian American artist primarily active in Maine and New York and recognized for his coastal Maine seascape images. Leonard Clayton (1899-1977) was an art dealer and gallerist active in New York. Biographical note: "Brooklyn-born Guy Wiggins was the son of a prominent landscape painter with whom he initially studied. He had further studies at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and at the National Academy of Design in New York. At age twenty he was the youngest American artist to have a work accepted for the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In the 1920s he began summering at Old Lyme, Connecticut, as one of the junior members of that well-established group of American impressionists. In that environment, his work was influenced by Childe Hassam and other members of the Ten. In 1937 he moved his studio to Essex, Connecticut, where he founded an art school and continued to teach.
