Manner of Abraham Willaerts (Netherlands, 1603-1669), “Neptune,” painting of the mythological sea god depicted as a bearded man reclining on a beach while surrounded by shells and holding a trident. Ships sail in the distance under an ominously darkening sky. Early, illegible paper label to stretcher, verso, along with a stenciled number. Later wave-carved giltwood frame; black mat with 20th century lettering attributing the painting to Adrien Van der Werff along with his life dates and the title. Stretcher: 18 1/2 in. H x 16 1/4 in. W. Frame: 25 in. H x 23 in. W. 18th or early 19th century.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Michael Spalding, Nashville, TN; Ex-Christie’s, New York City, Old Master and 19th Century European Paintings, Feb. 26, 1997, lot 130; deaccessioned from the Sheldon Swope Art Museum in Terre Haute Indiana, 1997.
CONDITION: UV light inspection reveals retouching to the perimeter of the painting and a 2-inch area of repair/restoration to the center sky area. Canvas possibly cut down. A few scattered inclusions and fine craquelure. Several small losses to the later frame.
